Day Of The Dead
Saturday, 30 October 2021
We celebrated an evening of Day of the Dead or in Spanish Día de Muertos, is a Mexican holiday where family and friends gather for a joyful celebration to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. The celebrations are held annually over a few days, which includes sharing humorous stories, giving gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls or chocolate and visiting their graves. Altars or small shrines are built in family homes or public spaces to feature pictures and memorabilia of deceased relatives as well as favourite foods & beverages of the departed such as tequila, mezcal etc. or toys for children. Orange Mexican marigolds sometimes called Flor de Muerto (Flower of Dead) are not only used as decorations throughout but to attract souls, their bright petals & strong scent helps guide them from the cemeteries to their family homes.
